Givenchy Welcomes Public (and Me) to 2015 NYFW Show

Danielle Greene

Two looks from the Givenchy Spring Summer 2016 Collection

When I heard that the creative director of Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci, had decided to open up his 2015 New York Fashion Week runway show to over 1000 members of the public (including 280 fashion students), I was impressed by Tisci and elated at the slim chance of attending the show.

In an article in WWD, Tisci talks about why he decided to invite members of the pubic: “You know, fashion is amazing and very exclusive. But [I’ve long thought] one day I would love to do a show where anybody — which is the reality — could be a part of it.” The article conties, "The move embraces much that Tisci’sGivenchy stands for, combining the designer’s penchant for contrast — more typically applied to sartorial élan than audience demographics — and populist engagement in high fashion."

I decided that there would be no harm in trying-even though I had planned a trip to Paris and London months ago that happened to overlap with the show. Refreshing the webpage until it was 10 AM, I quickly completed the form and clicked send. And then I left for Paris two days later, without a stitch to wear to my first runway show.

And then, I got that fateful email...

I don't have the words to describe how excited I am about attending the Givenchy 2015 NYFW show. I generally haven't "won" contests, prizes, awards...except perhaps for "most improved." What did I do next? First thing-called the airline and changed my return flight from London to September 10. Second, booked an Airbnb for NYC for September 10-13. Third, went to my absolute favorite vintage store-One of a Kind to find a killer outfit for the event. And they delivered! Outfit will be revealed after the show, but lets just say a bit of suede.

So stay tuned, I'll be instagramming and tweeting like mad on September 11, and will write as much as I can about the show aftwards.
